The Secretary of the Department of National Security, Kristi Noem, said the Federal Administration will soon expand immigration operations in Chicago, confirming the plans to increase the presence of federal agents in the third largest city in the country, while President Donald Trump continues to lash out at the Democratic leadership of Illinois.

Noem’s comments are produced after the National Security Department requested limited logistical support to the officers of the Great Lakes Naval Station to support the agency’s early operations. The military installation is about 56 kilometers (35 miles) north of Chicago.

“We have had ongoing operations with ICE in Chicago … but we intend to add more resources to those operations,” Noem said during an appearance in “Face the Nation” by CBS News.

Noem refused to provide more details about the planned increase of federal officers. This occurs after the Trump administration deployed elements of the National Guard in Washington, DC, to address crime, immigration and destitution, and two months after sending troops to Los Angeles.

Trump lashed out at the governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, in a publication on social networks on Saturday, warning him that he must quickly solve the crime problems of Chicago “or we will intervene.” The Republican president has also been critical of the mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson.

Johnson and Pritzker reject federal mobilization, stating that the crime has decreased in Chicago. They are planning to demand if Trump advances with the plan.

Johnson signed an order that prohibits the Chicago Police Department from helping federal authorities with the application of the Civil Immigration Law or any patrol, traffic control and related control points during the increase.

Chicago houses a large immigrant population, and both the city and the state of Illinois have some of the most strict rules of the country against cooperation with the efforts to apply the federal government’s immigration law. That has often put the city and disagree with the Trump administration while trying to carry out its mass deportation agenda.

In an interview issued on Sunday in “Face the Nation”, Pritzker said that Trump’s plans to mobilize federal forces in the city can be part of a plan to “stop the elections in 2026 or, frankly, take control of those elections”.

Noem said it was a “prerogative” of Trump to deploy national guard troops in Chicago, as he did in Los Angeles in June amid protests for immigration in the city of California.

“I know I wouldn’t stand today if President Trump hadn’t taken action,” said Noem. “That city would have burned if it had been left at the mercy of the mayor and the governor of that state.”
