More than 260,000 containers of grated cheese were removed in 31 states of the country and Puerto Rico due to possible contamination with metal fragments, health authorities reported.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicated that The company, Great Lakes Cheese Co., recalled the products from several chains including Target, Walmart and Aldi.
The recall includes several types of cheeses such as mozzarella, Italian style, pizza style, mozzarella and provolone, and mozzarella and parmesan.
The recall has a Class II classification, because the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” according to the FDA website.

An FDA representative notes that ingesting metal fragments can cause injuries such as tooth damage, laceration of the mouth or throat, or laceration or perforation of the intestine.
The 31 states where these products were distributed include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, Nuevo Mexico, Nevada, Nueva York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, TexasUtah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin, in addition to Puerto Rico.
