Chanukah in the Square to continue with safety precautions, freeze coming to Charleston
Charleston’s Chanukah on the Square, a celebration of the 8-day Jewish Festival of Lights, will be held at 4 to 6 p.m. as planned on Marion Square.
The cold front will be rolling into the Lowcountry then, plunging temperatures into the 40s with gusty winds making it feel colder. Attendees should dress warmly for the menorah lighting and to enjoy the live music, children’s activities, hot latkes, steaming soup, pretzels, popcorn and burgers.
Brutal cold was not the only obstacle to a joyful celebration.
“The Charleston Police Department and local law enforcement have mobilized extensive resources to ensure that this gathering is safe,” said Rabbi Yossi Refson of the Center for Jewish Life in a statement today.
The security is a precaution after the Dec. 14 mass shooting at Sydney, Australia Chanukah beach celebration that left 16 dead and at least 29 hospitalized. Two suspects are in custody.
“Our hearts are shattered by the horrific terrorist attack,” Refson wrote, adding that one of those killed was his colleague and friend, Rabbi Eli Schlanger. “Darkness will never extinguish light. Hate will never smother our flame. Tonight, we gather not in fear, but in strength.”
Refson told the Post and Courier that, Rabbi Eli leaves behind a wife and baby.
Despite the tragedy, he said he was optimistic about the future. He noted that one of the heroes who overpowered and disarmed a shooter at the Australian Chanukah party was a Muslim.
Indeed, Australian media is hailing Muslim fruit shop owner Ahmed Al Ahmed for approaching the gunman, grabbing his rifle and wrestling it away, for saving many lives. He was wounded by the gunman, Reuters reports.
