Charles Leclerc Leads Pirelli Tyre Test at Barcelona

Charles Leclerc emerged victorious in a recent tyre testing session conducted by Pirelli at the prestigious Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Ferrari driver demonstrated exceptional skill, setting the fastest time during the two-day test.

Two-Day Test Highlights

Both Ferrari and McLaren participated in the test, using modified versions of their 2024 cars to simulate expected downforce levels for the F1 2026 regulations, a roughly 20 percent decrease from the 2025 models. Pirelli specified the test programs to ensure accurate data collection for the upcoming seasons’ tyres.

The 2026 tyres feature narrower dimensions compared to their current counterparts, with the front tyres reduced by 25 millimeters and the rears by 30 millimeters.

Day-by-Day Performance

On the first day, Lewis Hamilton displayed superior pace in the Ferrari SF-24, finishing with a 1:15.93 lap time, just 0.13 seconds quicker than teammate Charles Leclerc. Lando Norris, piloting the McLaren MCL60, set a personal best of 1:15.21, almost eight-tenths of a second faster than Leclerc.

By the final day of testing, Leclerc took the lead, achieving a remarkable 1:14.971 lap time across 74 laps. His performance was over nine-tenths of a second superior to Oscar Piastri’s 1:15.815, and a full second faster than Lewis Hamilton’s 1:16.759.

Testing Insights

Despite the varied test programs, the data gathered from such sessions is invaluable for tyre manufacturers. Each driver’s performance provides critical information about the tyres’ behavior and durability under various conditions.

“It was a very useful session, particularly when it came to providing a comparison between the various different constructions for next season,” stated Mario Isola, Pirelli’s representative. “As well as experimenting with some compounds from the harder end of the range.”

The Barcelona circuit, renowned for its challenging conditions and high tyre degradation, made it an ideal setting for this type of testing. Isola emphasized the importance of the information collected and expressed gratitude to all participating teams for their support.

Future Test Schedule

Pirelli’s testing journey continues with the next sessions scheduled for the Jerez circuit. Alpine will conduct tests on February 13th and 14th, followed by single-day tests involving McLaren and Mercedes.

The pre-season testing blitz will culminate with another Pirelli tyre test in Bahrain. Alpine and Williams will double up on February 2nd and 3rd to continue refining the 2026 tyre constructions.

“The Barcelona circuit is known as one of the most demanding for the tyres in terms of the energy exerted and degradation, therefore the information we have gathered over these two busy days will be very important for the future development of this generation of tyres,”

“It’s a really demanding start to the year with four test sessions even before the season begins and I want to thank all the teams that are working with us, because we know how busy they are at the moment.”

Conclusion

Charles Leclerc’s strong performance in the Pirelli tyre test exemplifies Ferrari’s continued competitiveness and commitment to refining their setup for the upcoming F1 season. The insights from such tests will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of Formula One tyres and technology.

Stay tuned for more updates from this intense period of test sessions as the F1 season approaches.
