A renowned Australian artist has been found dead in his garden, with his devastated community remembering the talented sculptor as a much-loved friend. Dion Horstmans, 57, is believed to have died on Saturday afternoon at his home in south Bondi, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, leaving his family heartbroken.

The celebrated artist was best known for his multi-dimensional geometric wall sculptures, often in bright fluorescent colours. Originally from Wellington in New Zealand, he spent 15 years working in the film industry making props and models for movie sets before becoming a full-time artist.

‘I have just found out that the amazingly talented Dion Horstmans has moved on… It is a real shock to find out that he has passed away,’ a Facebook post read. ‘The world is a lesser place now without you in it… those talented hands of yours have left their mark, and sadly will no longer.’

‘So sorry to hear this the world will be a lesser place without him in it. Truly saddened and condolences to his family,’ another tribute read.

Personal Details and Family

Daily Mail Australia understands he was in an on-again, off-again relationship with psychologist Jo Mooney (nee Leidreiter). The couple were both long-time residents of the beachside suburb but were not believed to be living together at the time of his death. He is survived by two adult daughters, Juna and Zaza, who are based in Byron Bay and have followed in his artistic footsteps.
