PALERMO – The protection network is still narrowing which for years has guaranteed the hiding of Matteo Messina Denaro.
The carabinieri of the Ros arrested Antonio Messina, 79 years old, known as “The lawyer”, a prominent figure linked to the mafia family of Campobello di Mazara.
The precautionary custody order was issued by the Court of Palermo at the request of the District Anti -Mafia Directorate.
According to the investigators, Messina – already fugitive, sentenced in the past for external competition in mafia and drug trafficking association, and linked to Freemasonry in sleep – would have had a central role in the management of the illegal proceeds of the gang, guaranteeing Matteo Messina Denaro a constant financial support even during the long escape from justice.
Not only that: the suspect would have maintained contacts with active mafia exponents in various municipalities in the province of Trapani, promoting operations for the acquisition of economic activities.
His name had emerged in the correspondence between the boss and Laura Bonafede, in which he was called with the pseudonym “Solimano” and criticized in terms that the magistrates define as “high mafia density”.
Antonio Messina is now under house arrest, supervised with electronic bracelet. Meanwhile, carpet searches are underway in the provinces of Trapani and Bologna, while the carabinieri inspect what is indicated as the real lair used by Messina Denaro during his hiding.
