Canada Wildfires force Evacuation of Thousands

WINNIPEG – The Province of Manitoba in Canada has declared a state of emergency as rapidly spreading wildfires prompt mass evacuations. Over 17,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes as of Wednesday night, local time.

“The Manitoba government has announced an emergency in all provinces due to the situation of forest fires,” stated Manitoba premier Wab Kinew during a press conference on Friday, as reported by AFP.

“This is the biggest evacuation that has occurred in Manitoba in the memory of most people,” Kinew added, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Military aircraft have been deployed to assist in the evacuation efforts, particularly in remote areas and indigenous communities. Many evacuees are being transported to winnipeg, the capital city of Manitoba.

The wildfires originated near the small town of Sherridon and quickly spread towards Flin Flon, a city with a population of approximately 5,000.

“This is very extraordinary,” said Sheryl Matheson, a local resident and owner of a fishing cottage. “Very smoky. You can see fire from a distance of four or five kilometers (km) and move quickly.”

Matheson added that the flames reached heights of over 121 feet, making it impossible for firefighters to approach and combat the blaze effectively.

Elsaida Alerta, another resident, shared her experience with CBC, describing the “big anxiety” she felt while preparing to evacuate Flin Flon.”Especially for someone who lives in a big city (previous), who never had to evacuate, this really made stress,” she said.

last Thursday, the state of emergency was extended to Saskatchewan Province, where evacuees are seeking refuge in temporary shelters after enduring long and arduous journeys marked by notable traffic congestion.

“This is a very serious situation that we face at Saskatchewan,” said saskatchewan’s Premier Scott Moe. “We apply every action that allows to prepare our community. If you look forward, the situation does not look good. It seems that it will get worse.”

Experts attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in Canada to climate change. In the past month alone, nearly 200,000 hectares of forest have been scorched, a figure three times higher than the annual average over the preceding five years.

During the country’s worst forest fire season in 2023, the only recorded fatality was a firefighter.

Currently, there are 134 active fires across Canada, including those in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. Approximately half of these fires are classified as uncontrolled.
