Calabria GPs Face Scrutiny Over Prescriptions, Sparking Debate on Healthcare Costs

A regional councilor is questioning teh rationale behind investigations into doctors’ prescribing habits, citing concerns over patient care and physician autonomy.

The debate over healthcare costs and physician autonomy is intensifying in Calabria, Italy, after regional councilor of the Democratic Party, Giovanni Muraca, submitted a formal inquiry to regional council President Roberto Occhiuto. The question calls for an urgent review of the management of prescriptions issued by general practitioners (GPs) in the region.

Muraca has voiced strong opposition to recent “investigations and reliefs” targeting GPs, which focus on prescriptions for drugs deemed “improper,” even when those prescriptions fall within established medical guidelines. According to Muraca, these investigations are motivated by a desire to cut healthcare costs, perhaps at the expense of citizens’ right to healthcare. He argues that the probes undermine doctors’ decision-making power in choosing the best treatments for their patients.

The councilor stated that doctors are being “questioned for having prescribed their patients common drugs such as anti -inflammatory,gastroprotectors,omega 3 and even antibiotics.”

Doctors in Difficulty

Muraca emphasized the difficulties these investigations pose for Calabrian doctors. He acknowledged their dedication and professionalism despite the systemic challenges within the regional healthcare system. The potential “sanctions deriving from these measures” are based on what he describes as “new and unreachable criteria of the exclusively accountant,” raising significant concerns among healthcare professionals.

“This system risks compromising the quality of care and the right to health, sanctioned by the Constitution…”

Muraca warns that the current system could force doctors to make difficult choices, balancing patient needs against strict and,in his view,”incomprehensible guidelines for the cost reduction.”

Call for Action

in his formal question,Muraca urges the regional council to take immediate action to protect Calabrian doctors. He suggests evaluating a suspension of the charges while a technical-scientific study is conducted. Moreover, he calls for concrete initiatives to address the underlying issues that he believes threaten the stability and effectiveness of the regional health system.
