Colombia has been accepted into the Development Bank (NDB) of the BRICS Group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This move signifies a strategic effort to broaden the country’s financial resources for structural and sustainable development initiatives.

The Colombian government has pledged to contribute US $512.5 million to the NDB. According to official statements, this contribution involves purchasing shares, granting Colombia financial integration and access to the bank’s advantages. Of the total commitment, US $102.5 million is to be disbursed within six months of the agreement’s official signing. The remaining US $410 million is a contingent commitment, payable only if the bank requests it in the future.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that after this adhesion, Colombia is not a member of the group, but integrated into its development bank. This arrangement allows access to resources and credit lines without granting voting rights within the BRICS bloc.

According to government sources, this decision reflects an intention to diversify international funding sources, notably for projects related to clean energy, infrastructure, and sustainability, reducing exclusive reliance on the International Monetary Fund, IMF, or the World Bank.

Benefits of Joining the BRICS Development Bank

Access to the NDB provides Colombia with opportunities to finance projects that contribute To the country’s progress, offering terms comparable to those of the Inter-American Development Bank, IDB, and other multilateral organizations.

“We have never challenged the USA. We continue in contact with that country and maintain a dialog in investment, migration and drug trafficking issues.”

As indicated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Laura Sarabia, requested the entrance to the agency in May 2025. This decision occurred amidst diplomatic tensions with the United States concerning the imposition of global tariffs.

The minister also stated that Colombia’s access to the bank facilitates financing for ferrous projects. “We continue in contact with the United States, which is our main ally,” he added.

For the internationalist and professor of the Javeriana University, Camilo González, the benefits for Colombia are the diversification of financing sources. He stated, “This takes on special relevance in a context of cuts in the USAID, increased tariffs and risk of closing credit lines for the fiscal situation.” He believes that Colombia gains a new funding avenue and strengthens ties with China.
