The president Gabriel Boric joined the Teletón solidarity call, thanking everyone who participates in this campaign. The President assured that “the phrase that indicates that the campaign ‘unites the hearts of Chile’ is not an empty expression,” but a reality.
“I have had to see him touring Chile,” said the head of state, referring to the spirit of the solidarity event. Along these lines, he reported that he has witnessed this work in the different Telethon institutes throughout the country.
During his speech, the President valued Telethon as a “beautiful space” that encourages unity in a complex social context. “And that’s why This space is beautiful, because these are polarized times. These are difficult times, these are times where it is easier to only look for people with whom you agree and distance yourself from those who think differently. The Teletón is a moment that invites us to leave that aside -differences- and I hope it is contagious, not only during these 27 hours, but during the 365 days of the year,” he reflected.
The President wanted to convey that the idea that “the Telethon is every day” is true. He explained that often people who do not have a disability think about the institution only during the 27-hour broadcast. “But the Telethon is happening every day of the year, with its workers, with the boys and girls who are improving themselves day by day, with the families they are caring for and who are there accompanying,” he said.
Support that turns into achievements
For this work to be possible, the President stressed that it is essential support that is raised during the 27 hours of transmission. He referred to the goal of the collection, a figure that may seem difficult to measure, he explained.
“It seems difficult to grasp. It seems difficult to imagine, but that figure at the end of the day is not just money, it translates into smiles, it translates into a trajectory of effort that changes life,” said the President.
Regarding the motivation to collaborate, the President was clear in asking that the impulse not be fear or guilt. “Let’s not do it out of fear of ever being there, or out of guilt. Let’s do it for love, because Telethon is good for us”, he expressed.
President Boric values the benefit of Telethon for the country
“It is good in these 27 hours where we are all together, but it is good every day and it is good in Santiago, but also in Calama, also in Copiapó, in Temuco, in Arica, in Valparaíso, in Concepción,” he expressed.
He also announced the upcoming expansion of this support network. “It is doing well in Talca and soon, also in Rancagua and Chillán,” he added, valuing the work of the Institute.
Subsequently, Boric shared a figure from the National Disability Study for the year 2022 that, in his opinion, is often unknown. “17% of children over 2 years old in Chile have some type of disability, 17%“He said. He added that, frequently, these boys and girls do not receive the opportunities they deserve to develop their abilities. “And boy, they have talents,” he said, remembering his visits to the Telethon centers.
