An elderly woman lost her life in the emergency room of the Villa Betania clinic in Naples in recent days. The woman’s family complain about critical issues in the care provided by hospital healthcare staff to their relative, who passed away at the age of 86.
Perillo: “Questions about the times of supervision, assistance and intervention”
The lawyer Sergio Perillo of the Naples Court on behalf of his client, Corrado Perillo, presented a formal complaint filed at the Carabinieri Command-Naples-Ponticelli Station. The lawyer explains the story to NapoliToday and what does not convince the woman’s family, from her hospitalization until her death: “On the morning of 01.02.2026, Mr. Perillo’s mother, Clotilde Cotecchia, aged 86, was transported to the emergency room of the aforementioned facility following an illness. The woman was “triaged” in the afternoon and, when her son left the clinic, as she was unable to stay on the express imposition of the health workers present there, was alert and conscious, although awaiting treatment. On the morning of 01.03.2026, Mr. Corrado Perillo returned to the facility and, once he entered the emergency room, he found the mother still in the emergency room, moved only from an angle, motionless and apparently asleep reaction, Mr. Perillo noticed that the mother was not showing signs of life and immediately requested the intervention of the healthcare personnel, who did not intervene immediately. Subsequently, the operators transferred Mrs. Cotecchia to another room, and then communicated to her son, shortly after, the death. The circumstances described above raise disturbing questions about the times of supervision, assistance and intervention within the emergency room and make it necessary for a public investigation into what happened. seizure of the body and a careful autopsy examination”.
The hospital version
The general director Vincenzo Bottino spoke about the death of the 86-year-old lady in the emergency room of the Betania Evangelical hospital in Naples. “In the meantime, I express my condolences, that of the management and all the staff, to the family for the passing of the lady. The woman had arrived in our emergency room in critical clinical conditions and, after triage, a diagnosis of severe sepsis supported by bilateral pneumonia and waiting for a bed had been made. The health management has already started an internal investigation to verify the correctness of all the procedures adopted by the doctors who assisted the patient. The pain of the family is completely understandable and we have full confidence in the work of the judiciary. However, we do not accept that an excellent healthcare facility like ours should be banned before the facts are established.”
