Bird Flu Steyr: Geese Farm Outbreak

by Archynetys News Desk

Steyr – The highly pathogenic form of bird flu (H5N1) was detected on Wednesday in a poultry farm with around 700 geese in Steyr. The state of Upper Austria announced this in a broadcast. A number of animals have already died, the remaining poultry will be killed on the orders of the magistrate. The affected farm is close to the Enns, where isolated wild birds that died in recent weeks tested positive for the virus.

A protection zone will be set up around the company for at least 21 days and a monitoring zone for at least 30 days in order to quickly identify possible occurrences in other holdings and to prevent potential transmission, the release said. This means, among other things, mandatory stables, restricted access to the stables and disinfection measures. This season, bird flu strain H5N1 has already been detected in wild birds in several federal states and in small animal husbandry in Burgenland. Since November 3rd, the entire Austrian federal territory has been defined as an “area with increased risk”. (WHAT)
