Mexico City. Given the start of bird migration from the United States and Canada during the fall-winter season, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURE) reported that it will reinforce epidemiological surveillance and monitoring of wild birds to promptly detect the possible circulation of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) AH5N1 virus and apply preventive measures to protect poultry production. national.
Although Mexico maintains its status as a country free of this virus, in accordance with the guidelines of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO). AGRICULTURE indicated that, in the last three years, isolated cases have been detected, mainly near wetlands where migratory birds rest, as well as in family production without biosafety infrastructure, but they did not represent risks.
The AH5N1 virus was eradicated from Mexico during the 2023 winter season through the National Animal Health Emergency Device (Dinesa), which launched strict control and elimination actions.
Through the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica) and the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, the 32 states of the country will be monitored and biosafety measures will be reinforced in commercial and backyard production units.
Senasica recalled that technical production units must maintain optimal biosafety conditions and prevent the entry of wild birds through bird netting, sealed doors and roofs without holes.
Likewise, all commercial farms must have an authorized responsible veterinary doctor (MVRA), in charge of verifying compliance with sanitary provisions and immediately reporting any increase in mortality or symptoms such as decreased posture, diarrhea, bruising of combs and wattles, sneezing or runny nose.
The federal agency emphasized that it is essential that producers immediately notify any anomaly observed in the birds. To report suspicions of exotic diseases or pests, Senasica makes available the numbers 800 751 2100 and WhatsApp 55 3996 4462, available 24 hours a day, in addition to its offices throughout the country.
