Béthusy School Schedules: Results & Analysis

by Archynetys News Desk

Two months after the introduction of a new timetable at the Béthusy school, the Lausanne Municipal Council draws up an initial, generally positive assessment. But on the ground, the feedback is more nuanced, in particular because of the increased pressure on extracurricular structures.

Since the start of the school year, students aged 10 and over, from 7th to 11th grade, have started classes at 8:15 a.m., half an hour later than before. The objective of this pilot project to better respect the biological rhythm of adolescents has been achieved, according to the report from the Municipal Council. He believes that this adaptation allows students to gain concentration thanks to prolonged sleep. An observation that has reached consensus among health professionals.

Lunch break under pressure

But this extra half hour of sleep comes at a cost: the lunch break has been reduced to 45 minutes. As a result, many more students stay to eat on site, saturating the after-school reception facilities and the refectory.

Forty-five minutes to eat with 150 people in the same room is not a relaxing atmosphere, deplores the management of the establishment at the microphone of La Matinale.

She admits that she already has doubts about the sustainability of the project, which she describes as “resource-intensive”.

Other schools soon?

The test must continue until the end of the school year and the Municipality prefers to wait before making a decision.

The Municipal Council, for its part, shows an interest in extending the system to other establishments. But the management of Béthusy recalls that its school was chosen because of its infrastructure adapted to such a change. A capacity that other Lausanne schools do not necessarily share, according to her.
