From about mid-February, when the authorities announced that there would be no hot water until the end of the heating season, in the BelSU dormitories on Studencheskaya Street, students had to heat water on electric stoves to wash themselves, spending at least half an hour on this. By the way, the ban on the use of electric kettles and boilers on campus has been in effect for a long time. For the convenience of students, five showers for boys and girls were made in the basement of hostel No. 5. Lantern journalist and BelSU student Grigory Kosov tells how student life has changed over these weeks.
Five showers for the entire campus
Previously, there were showers in every dormitory, and everyone washed at their own place. After the hot water was turned off, the question of hygiene for hundreds of students arose and caused a strong reaction from them. Someone even complained Ekaterina Mizulina (public figure, member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, director of the “Safe Internet League” – F.’s note).
After this, the governor met with the students Vyacheslav Gladkov, and the rector Evgenia Karlovskaya promised to “find solutions.”
“We are actively looking for solutions to this difficult situation. We understand that we will not be able to provide hot water to each section. We will try to purchase and install boilers for showering in specially organized areas of dormitories on the site on the street as soon as possible. Student. As soon as they are ready to open, we will inform you immediately. Temporary alternatives for students living in communities (quote from the rector – approx. F.) on Studencheskaya Street from tomorrow – showers in the Svetlana Khorkina USC and hostel No. 4 on Pobeda Street,” wrote Evgenia Karlovskaya in her Telegram channel.
The temporary alternative turned out to be, firstly, completely inconvenient, because it was too far to go to the shower – from Studencheskaya to Pobeda Street. And secondly, there is hot water quickly ended, the pool at the Khorkina sports complex was closed precisely because of the lack of hot water.
“Specially organized places” were placed on the ground floor of hostel No. 5. More precisely, showers were there before, they just weren’t used, but now they decided to install water heaters. Logically, it would be good to install them on every shower in the buildings, but then the load on the network would increase significantly. Apparently that’s why they limited themselves to only ten showers.
Dormitory No. 5 is located in the center of the campus. Nearby are dormitories No. 1, No. 3 and No. 8, there is no hot water there, and all students now go to visit dormitory No. 5 for bathing. Showers can be found by signs.
Both women’s and men’s showers are the same: locker rooms with iron lockers and cubicles. Moreover, two of them are “VIP” – closed with doors, and the rest with curtains.
The showers are full of reminders on how to use them and a “life hack” on how to adjust the warm water. The rooms operate on a schedule: two hours for cleaning, and then an hour break for the water to heat up. But no one seems to pay much attention to opening hours; they come when needed, even during a break.
— I visit showers all the time, and I like almost everything. It often happens that there is hot water in only one cabin out of five, and in a different one each time. Cleanliness also leaves much to be desired, but this is the responsibility of the residents: once I even found someone’s dirty panties in the booth. But in general, these booths are good as a temporary solution,” freshman Maxim shared the details.
Student Anna, on the contrary, did not dare to use the common showers.
– I am repulsed by the idea that in our [пятом] There are more than a thousand people in the hostel, and there are only five cubicles for everyone – this is very little. They rarely have hot water, and some students don’t even want to clean up after themselves,” the girl complained.
“We washed ourselves, wrapped our heads and went”
Several girls sat by the showers, waiting for the water to heat up.
“There are a lot of us, the water doesn’t have time to heat up.” Unfortunately, not everyone observes cleanliness, but thank you for that too,” shared one of them, Arzu.
— It’s a little cold, but the showers themselves are good. If the water were warmer, then everything would suit me,” added another.
Alina lives in dormitory No. 3, there is no hot water there, and she has to go to dormitory No. 5, but this does not bother her much.
— We don’t have that much space in our dorm. [чтобы сделать душевые]I don’t even know where these showers could be located. The workers just came to us, took measurements, and that was it. That’s why we go to the fifth dormitory. We’re already used to it: we washed ourselves, wrapped our hair and went,” Alina said.
— Doesn’t walking down the street after a shower bother you?
– No. Many students waiting in line say this is a very good temporary solution. And some of the problems are on the conscience of the residents themselves, while others do not depend on anyone.
Some students sent reviews about the showers on VKontakte. One girl, who wished to remain anonymous, said she thought it was unfair to have showers in only one dorm.
“In other hostels there is not even such an opportunity. That’s why people come here from other hostels, and they can easily get sick: they wrapped their heads and went [через улицу]”, she wrote. We would like to add that hair dryers are also not allowed in student dormitories.
