The Battle of Phan Rangwhich took place from au is one of the last two major and decisive battles of the Vietnam War before the Fall of Saigon. North Vietnam defeated South Vietnam there, the losses of the attackers being significantly lower than those of the defenders. The road to Saigon was partly open and the North Vietnamese offensive continued rapidly.
The combined forces of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong had launched the Ho Chi Minh Campaign the previous December. In March, they had won a decisive victory at Buôn Ma Thuột, capturing the central highlands and the towns of Quảng Trị, Huế and Đà Nẵng. All that remained was to conquer the Mekong Delta.
To reach the Delta, PNVN forces had to eliminate the ARVN-held Phan Rang defensive perimeter along National Highway 1, from Du Long Pass (in the far south of Khánh Hòa Province) to the town of Phan Rang (in the far south of Ninh Thuận Province). Phan Rang was of vital importance to the South Vietnamese, home to Phan Rang Air Base (in) – the headquarters of the 92e tactical squadron, the 2e air division of the Vietnamese Air Force (FAVN)[[1]:385-433.

With the breakup of the defense line of the 3rd Airborne Brigade at the M’Đrăk Pass (in)the appearance of APVN tanks at Ninh Hoa and the news that the headquarters of the 2e ARVN corps had fled Nha Trang, ARVN control along the central coast disintegrated[[1]:384.
The capture of Phan Rang, then of Xuân Lộc five days later, opened the way to Saigon and allowed the start of the final assault on South Vietnam, which took place on April 30, 1975, the day of the Fall of the South Vietnamese capital.
