Barry Keoghan: Why He’s Stepping Back

Barry Keoghan continues to be amazed by the enormous online hatred that is sometimes shared about films and actors. The British star, who will soon play the role of Ringo Starr in the four-part series about the Beatles, reports this in conversation with the channel SiriusXM’s Hits.

Keoghan left all social media channels in 2024 due to all the hate messages directed at him. “There’s a lot of hate online,” he says. “So much is said about the way I look. And we are now really past the point that ‘everyone has to go through this’. It has caused me to withdraw. I would rather not attend public events anymore, I would rather not go outside anymore. It is really a big problem.”

The actor even doubted whether he still wanted to play film roles. “I’m blessed to have a huge fan base, and also to have so many people saying great things,” Keoghan said. “It’s so energizing to do Q&As and talk to people who appreciate your work. That’s the good side of this job.”

Keoghan received an Oscar nomination in 2023 for The Banshees of Inisherin. He recently appeared in the feature films Crime 101 and Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.
