Former senior figures connected to the government of Sheikh Hasina are being prosecuted in Bangladesh, following a deadly crackdown on protestors.
The first trial has commenced in Bangladesh for former senior officials tied to the ousted government of Sheikh Hasina. The proceedings began at a special court, according to the chief prosecutor.
The court in the capital, DHAKA, has accepted charges against eight police officials concerning the deaths of six protestors on August 5 of the previous year. This was the same day that Ms. Hasina reportedly fled the country as protesters stormed her palace.
The eight individuals face charges of crimes against humanity. Four are currently in custody, while the remaining four will be tried in absentia.
Formal Trial Begins
“The formal trial has begun,” said Tajul Islam, chief prosecutor of Bangladesh’s domestic International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), to reporters.
“The prosecution believes that this prosecution will be able to prove the crimes done by the accused,”
This marks the first formal charge related to the killings during the student-led uprising of the previous year. The uprising brought an end to Ms. Hasina’s 15-year rule.
Brutal Crackdown of 2024
The United Nations has reported that approximately 1,400 individuals were killed between July and August 2024. These deaths occurred when Ms.Hasina’s government initiated a campaign to suppress the protestors.
Among those facing trial is Dhaka’s former police commissioner, Habibur Rahman, who is being tried in absentia.
Ms. Hasina reportedly fled to India, an ally, by helicopter and remains in self-imposed exile, defying extradition requests to face charges of crimes against humanity.
Political Implications
The trials of senior figures from Ms. Hasina’s government are a key demand of political parties vying for power. The South Asian nation is preparing for elections that the interim government has pledged will occur before June 2026.
Islam stated that the eight men are accused of “different responsibilities,” including “superior command obligation, some for direct orders.. (and) some for participation.”
He expressed confidence in a triumphant prosecution, stating, “We have submitted as much evidence as required to prove crimes against humanity, both at a national and an international standard.”
The evidence includes video footage of the violence and voice recordings of Ms. hasina in “conversations with different people where she ordered the killing of the protesters using force and lethal weapons.”
The ICT was established by Ms. Hasina in 2009 to investigate crimes committed during Bangladesh’s 1971 war for independence. It has been criticized for disproportionately targeting political opponents.
