The American film “One Battle After Another”, with fourteen nominations, is the favorite this Sunday at the BAFTA ceremonythe British film awards in which the Brazilian film “The Secret Agent” is up for two awards. Another American film, “Pecadores”, candidate for thirteen awards, will fight with “One Battle After Another” to win more distinctions at the gala, starting at 7:00 p.m. (local and GMT).
The Brazilian film “The Secret Agent”, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, Nominated for four Oscar statuettes, it will compete at the BAFTAs for the categories of best original screenplay and best foreign language film. If he achieves the latter, Kleber Mendoça Filho would become the second Brazilian director to achieve this recognition. Walter Salles won the award in 1999 for “Central do Brasil” and in 2005 for “Motorcycle Diaries.” For their part, the American films “Hamnet”, a co-production with the United Kingdom, and “Marty Supreme” will compete for awards in eleven categories.
The record for the most BAFTA awards in one edition has been held, since 1971, by the American film “Two Men and a Destiny” (it won nine awards). This Sunday, four films will compete to surpass that mark. “One Battle After Another” is a tragicomedy by Paul Thomas Anderson, which addresses extremist excesses in the United States.

For its part, “Sinners,” by Ryan Coogler, is about the segregationism of the 1930s in the United States. “Hamnet” is a feature film about the family of playwright William Shakespeare, while “Marty Supreme” is about a table tennis player with insatiable ambition.
Another film that can win several awards in this edition is Frankenstein, directed by Mexican Guillermo del Toro, which has eight nominations. Brazil has four candidates, since in addition to the two for “The Secret Agent”, there are those for “Apocalipse nos Trópicos”, by Petra Costa and Alessandra Orofino, in the category of best documentary, and that of Adolpho Veloso in best photography for “Sonhos de Trem”.
The BAFTAs usually set the tone for the Oscars, which will be awarded on March 15. The list of BAFTA candidates is similar to that of the Hollywood awards, with “Sinners” leading with 16 nominations, followed by “One Battle After Another” with 13. The latter competes for the BAFTA for best film, best direction and best actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and best actress (Chase Infiniti).
“Sinners” competes in the important categories of the BAFTAs, with Michael B. Jordan nominated for best actor. Frankenstein, with nine Oscar nominations, aspires among others at the BAFTA for best supporting actor with the Australian Jacob Elordi. Another Mexican presence among the nominees is that of José Antonio García, in the best sound category for “One battle after another.”
In that section, García will compete with Costa Rican Felipe Pacheco for his participation in “Pecadores.” In the best supporting actor section, Puerto Rican Benicio del Toro was also nominated for “One Battle After Another.” For its part, Mexican producer Nidia Santiago is up for the best animated film award with “Amelie and the Secrets of Rain.”
The best film award will be “One Battle After Another”, “Sinners”, “Hamnet”, “Marty Supreme” and “Sentimental Value”. Competing in the best direction category will be Yorgos Lanthimos (“Bugonia”), Chloé Zhao (“Hamnet”), Josh Safdie (“Marty Supreme”), Paul Thomas Anderson (“Battle After Battle”), Joachim Trier (“Sentimental Value”) and Ryan Coogler (“Sinners”).
Chinese-American Chloé Zhao seeks to make history as the first woman to win the best director award twice, after winning in 2021 with “Nomadland.” In the best foreign language film section, in addition to “A Secret Agent”, the Spanish “Sirat”, the Iranian “A Simple Accident”, the Norwegian “Sentimental Value” and the Tunisian “The Voice of Hind Rajab” will compete.
