In Kang Lee-gwan’s Virus, translator Taek-sun (Bae Doo-na) reluctantly attends a blind date where she meets Essay (Son Seok-gu), a researcher. their initial encounter is awkward, but the following day, Taek-sun experiences a newfound optimism. She impulsively dons a striking dress and meets with Yeonwoo, an elementary school alumnus and car dealer. though, her rosy outlook is short-lived.

Taek-sun soon discovers she’s been infected with a virus boasting a 100% mortality rate. Seeking answers, she encounters researcher Dr. Lee Kyun (Kim Yoon-seok) and learns that her recent changes are symptoms of the infection. The situation becomes dire as red spots signal impending death within 24 hours. The film follows Dr. Lee Kyun’s desperate attempt to develop a treatment and the unexpected journey he undertakes with Taek-sun.

From Novel to Screen: A Genre-Bending Adaptation

Virus, slated for release on May 7th, is adapted from the novel Youth Drama Hangi and centers around the fictional toxo virus. The film draws inspiration from the real-world parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which uses cats as a primary host.In rodents,this parasite can disrupt the frontal lobe,leading to behavioral changes. The film reimagines this effect in humans, causing feelings of euphoria and intense attraction, regardless of personal will.

While viruses are a common trope in disaster films, Virus takes a different approach, framing the narrative as a romantic comedy. The story kicks off with Essay inadvertently infecting Taek-sun with the toxo virus after she consumes leftover fish paste in his home. The film highlights that the virus spreads through blood and non-equine means.

A Race Against Time: The Quest for a Cure

Taek-sun’s encounter with Dr. Lee Kyun, who holds the key to a potential cure, sets the stage for a thrilling journey. However, their path is fraught with obstacles. A faculty member (Moon Sung-geun), driven by ambition to exploit the virus for depression treatment, seeks to acquire Taek-sun’s antibodies, adding another layer of tension to their quest. The film explores the potential for genuine love to blossom between Taek-sun and Lee Kyun, questioning whether their connection is a result of the infection or something more profound.

Performances and Chemistry: A Critical Look

Bae Doo-na portrays Taek-sun, initially showcasing her character’s dormant romantic side. After infection, she embodies a newfound vivacity and charm. Her performance, ranging from subdued expressions to heightened emotional states, is a welcome change from recent roles. Her comedic timing shines, especially in scenes where she attempts to seduce the stoic Dr. Lee.

The film hinges on the audience’s investment in the sincerity of Taek-sun and Lee Kyun’s relationship. While Lee Kyun develops sympathy for Taek-sun’s struggle, Taek-sun becomes intrigued by the virus’s effects.The narrative introduces a compelling element: upon receiving the cure, they will lose all memory of their emotions while infected.

However, the romance between Bae Doo-na and Kim Yun-seok feels somewhat forced. Even discounting the virus’s influence, it’s difficult to fully grasp Taek-sun’s deep trust and affection for Lee Kyun. The lack of palpable chemistry and the noticeable age difference create a barrier to fully embracing their relationship. The film might have benefited from focusing more on the virus’s impact or the external conflicts it generates.

Sohn Suk-gu delivers a memorable performance in his brief appearance. He portrays essay as a bold and assertive character, confessing his feelings with a virus-induced intensity. his unique acting style and presence stand out, especially compared to actors with more extensive experience. While the plot and the central romance may be somewhat unconvincing, the actors’ individual performances are noteworthy.
