In a scene that highlights the intensity of the ongoing confrontations inside Sudan, members of the Rapid Support Forces broadcast live video clips from in front of the 22nd Infantry Division building in the city of Babanusa in West Kordofan State at sunset today, declaring their control over the military site, which the Sudanese army continued to confirm through its previous recordings that it was under its control.
Advisor to the Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Al-Basha Tabiq, confirmed in a blog post on Facebook that the control came after what he described as the army’s violation of the truce announced by the Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemedti,” stressing that the division was now under the control of their forces, while the Sudanese army did not issue any official comment on the recent developments.
Daily confrontations
The city of Babanusa in Western Kordofan witnessed violent confrontations on an almost daily basis between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces around the headquarters of the 22nd Infantry Division, which is the last of the army’s main military fortresses in the state. Field sources confirm that the fighting has not stopped for months, with both sides exchanging attacks using heavy weapons and drones, making the region one of the hottest hotspots of tension in western Sudan, amid a continuing state of military alert.
Sunday attack
Before the recent announcement of control, press reports attributed to military sources that the Sudanese army on Sunday repelled a new attack launched by the Rapid Support Forces on its advanced defenses in Babanusa. These sources reported that the attack used drones and heavy artillery, in an attempt to penetrate the army lines, but government forces were able to repel the attack and inflict losses on the attackers, which reflects the continuing escalating battles around the city.
Long siege
The 22nd Infantry Division has been subjected to a siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces for nearly two years, as government forces remained holed up inside their headquarters in Babanusa. The Native Administration had intervened earlier and succeeded in concluding a local truce between the two parties that lasted for more than a year, before it collapsed as a result of renewed military operations. The Rapid Support Forces accuse the army of violating that truce through its movements westward towards the headquarters of the 90th Brigade in the Heglig area, which led to an escalation of fighting again, bringing Babanusa back to the forefront of events as one of the most prominent battlefields in West Kordofan.
