Dramatic Uphill Battle Concludes in Photo Finish
Stage 3 of the Volta a Catalunya culminated in a nail-biting sprint to the finish line at La Molina, with Juan Ayuso
snatching victory from Primož Roglič
in a photo finish. The stage, a 219 km trek from Villas to The Mill, featured challenging climbs that tested the peloton and set the stage for a thrilling finale.

The Climbs That Defined the day
Following two stages characterized by tactical positioning and bonus sprints, Stage 3 introduced notable climbing challenges. The latter half of the stage was especially demanding, featuring the formidable Neck of the cross
(20.3 km at 5.1%) and the final ascent to La Molina
(12.2 km at 4.4%). While La Molina’s average gradient may seem moderate, the presence of a kilometer-long descent within the climb added an extra layer of complexity.

Breakaway and Peloton Dynamics
A breakaway group consisting of Bruno Armirail
(Decathlon Ag2r), Lorenzo Germani
(Groupama – FDJ), Alex Molenaar
(Rural box), and Mats Wenzel
(Kern Pharma) established a significant lead early in the stage. Though, with challenging climbs ahead, their chances of contesting the stage victory dwindled. The UAE and Lotta teams controlled the peloton’s pace, gradually reeling in the breakaway. A crash involving Lenny Martínez
on a descent added another layer of drama, though he managed to rejoin the group.
Tactical Maneuvering in the Final Kilometers
As the race approached La Molina,Marc Soler
initially led the peloton, but Nairo Quintana
launched an attack, disrupting the rhythm. A series of attacks and counter-attacks followed, with Lorenzo Fortunato
and Sepp Kuss
joining Soler in a breakaway. However, UAE’s strategic positioning ensured that Soler was isolated, forcing other teams to contribute to the chase.
The Decisive Sprint
In the final kilometers, Kuss initiated a move on a downhill section, creating a gap for himself and two others. Despite a frantic chase from behind, the leading trio maintained a slender advantage. A final surge from Soler set up Ayuso for the sprint, but Roglič timed his effort perfectly, appearing to have secured the win. However, a photo finish revealed that Ayuso had narrowly edged out Roglič, claiming a hard-fought victory. Mikel Landa
finished third, two seconds behind the leading duo.
overall Standings and Implications
With his stage victory, Juan Ayuso now leads the overall standings, with Primož Roglič trailing by six seconds. Landa sits in third place, five seconds behind Roglič. Several other contenders remain within striking distance, setting the stage for an exciting battle in the remaining stages. The top contenders are within 17 seconds of the race leader, including riders such as Legerf, Martin, carapse, From Plus, Van Eetvelt, Bernal, Lopez
and Kelderman
