Australian Teen Cameron Myers Sets New Indoor Mile Record at Millrose Games

Australian teenager Cameron Myers hastaken out another national record after finishing on the podium in what has been celebrated as “the greatest indoor mile race ever.”

The 18-year-old was one of several Australians to shine at the Millrose Games in New York. Meanwhile, Olympic silver medallist Jessica Hull battled through a week of illness to secure a place in next month’s world indoor championships in China.

Myers’ Epic Performance

But it was Myers who stole the show. He became the first under-20 athlete in history to run the mile—indoors or outdoors—in under 3:48. Myers crossed the finish line in 3:47.48, setting a new indoor Australian record and matching Olli Hoare’s outdoor best, to claim third in the men’s Wanamaker Mile.

Myers was in disbelief as he looked at the timing screen. “What an amazing race. I’m very happy and super excited to hear it equalled Ollie Hoare’s outdoor time. I’m just really happy,” Myers said. “I knew I had a big one in me. I was thinking 3:48 or 3:49 would be great, so I was really pleased when I crossed the line.”

World-Class Rivals

Myers’ achievements come amidst world-class competition. New world-record holder Yared Nuguse from Ethiopia and Hobbs Kessler from the United States became the first men in history to break 3:47 in an indoor mile, with Nuguse winning in 3:46.63 and Kessler placing second with 3:46.90.

Myers, whose time qualified him for the world athletics championships in Japan later this year, watched with intent. “I’d love to (go after the world record),” he told Citius Mag. “I think they’re still that little step above me, so I’ve got to work out how to find that extra second. It’s a good sign and it’s pretty crazy to be in a race where so many guys broke 3:50 (eight).”

Other Notable Performances

Besides Myers, other Australians left their mark at the Millrose Games. Ky Robinson, 22, finished fourth in the men’s 3000m, with a race-winning effort by Grant Fisher setting a new world record of 7:22.91. Robinson’s time of 7:30.38 is now under the qualifying standard for the world indoor championships.

Jessica Hull, who battled a cold during the competition, finished fourth in the women’s 3000m with a time of 8:30.91, also qualifying her for the world championships. Despite fading late, “It’s strange to feel like you’re a passenger in the race,” she said. “Sometimes it’s good to be reminded of that and hopefully I’ll just keep swinging up from here.”

Aussie sprint star Torrie Lewis also made history in her first indoor 200m race, setting a personal best of 22.65 seconds. Hours after winning the 60m sprint, she became the world leader in the 200m for 2025.

Millrose Games Recap

The Millrose Games yielded an extraordinary blend of fierce competition and groundbreaking performances. Myers and Robinson’s qualification for the world championships and Lewis’s world-leading time shine among these achievements. “The greatest indoor mile race ever” indeed lived up to its billing.
