A federal judge has ordered the American Trucking Associations to pay the state of Rhode Island $200,000 in the ongoing fight over truck tolls.
The decision came as the ATA was seeking to recover attorneys’ fees from the state Department of Transportation. The court found that the ATA failed to show it was entitled to reimbursement.
The truck toll program was initially struck down in 2022 as unconstitutional and the gantries were shut off.
Another court largely overturned the rulling in 2024 and found that the daily caps on tolls to help local trucking companies were discriminatory.

Rhode Island has yet to resume collecting the tolls. The state has said both the equipment and the billing systems need upgrades.
