A more recent theoretical approach involves using high-powered lasers from a spacecraft to vaporize part of the asteroid. These lasers would exert a thrust, potentially changing the asteroid’s course. While feasible in theory, lab tests suggest this technique remains less mainstream in current planetary defense strategies.
Decision-Making Process
In the event that the current asteroid poses a threat, the response would depend on international cooperation and the recommendations from experts. The final decision would be determined by world leaders, highlighting the global nature of space defense.
“Seven and a half years is a long time to prepare,” stated Moissl. Despite the current high odds of avoiding collision, being prepared is crucial. This preparation might involve evacuation plans and other emergency measures if the impact site is inhabited.
Awaiting More Data
The most important takeaway from this situation is the need for continuous monitoring and data collection. The current probability of 3.1% is a significant spike, but it is far more likely that the asteroid will miss Earth entirely. Experts estimate a 97% chance of no collision.
“We are not helpless,” Moissl emphasized. “We have the tools and techniques to mitigate this threat if it materializes.” This reassurance comes from decades of research and robust space defense programs.
