Bridgeville Author Unveils “Aroughcoune”: A Journey into Genetic Experimentation and Conspiracy

In the diverse landscape of contemporary literature, Mark Berton, a 48-year-old author from Bridgeville, brings a unique narrative to life. On February 19, Berton released “Aroughcoune,” a novel that delves into the unsettling realms of genetic experimentation and government conspiracies.

The Unconventional Antagonist

The story centers around a colossal, genetically engineered raccoon that has escaped from a secret laboratory in Western Pennsylvania. This unconventional antagonist, referred to as Aroughcoune, embodies the themes of the book—blurring the lines between nature and artificial creation.

“It’s on the fringe—something you don’t typically expect,” Berton notes, reflecting on the unorthodox choice of his main character. “Weird fiction is not something to fear. It challenges readers to step out of their comfort zones and explore new ideas.”

A Cast of Diverse Characters

The book features a diverse cast of characters, each playing a crucial role in the unfolding narrative. Slotter, a former warden, is no stranger to the Aroughcoune, having traced its origins. Warden Monique McKesson confronts the creature in her park, adding a personal element to the story. Meanwhile, Zin and Bill, young men caught in the chaos, and Mingan, an Iroquois man seeking ancient knowledge, offer unique perspectives on the threat.

Berton emphasizes the representation of diverse characters within his novel, stating, “I wanted to include diversity in my story, particularly Native American representation. This was significant to me because I helped initiate a sister library program with the Shawnee Tribe Cultural Center at the Bridgeville Library.”

Blurring the Lines Between Science and Nature

“Aroughcoune” is not just a tale of a marauding raccoon; it’s a commentary on government cover-ups and secret experiments. Berton weaves together fact and fiction, exploring the implications of genetic modification and its ethical boundaries.

“The Aroughcoune is a blend of animal instincts and unpredictable behavior, due to its genetic alterations,” Berton explains. “It challenges readers to question what we consider natural and what is the result of human intervention.”

Available Across Multiple Platforms

“Aroughcoune” is published by Roswell Press, a United Kingdom-based press house. Readers can purchase the book at various retailers, including Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Waterstones in the UK.

A Final Note from the Author

Berton, who has previously authored “Dixmont State Hospital” and “Moon Township,” is already at work on his next novel. He hopes that “Aroughcoune” will resonate with audiences and encourages readers to embrace the unexpected.

“It’s a good story told well,” Berton says. “I believe the narrative will entertain and provoke thought.”
