Addressing the Rising Tide of Eating Disorders: A Proactive Approach
In a significant step towards combating the growing prevalence of eating disorders, a new assisted meal program has been initiated in Saluzzo, Italy. This initiative aims to provide crucial support for individuals grappling with conditions like anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder, which have seen a concerning rise in recent years. According to the National Institute of Health, cases of eating disorders have doubled, with an increasingly early onset and complex underlying causes.
The Assisted meal Program: A Closer Look
The program, currently operating on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with aspirations to expand to a Monday-to-Friday schedule mirroring a prosperous model in Cuneo, is based at the Center for Food Behavior Disorders (DCA) in Corso France 10, Cuneo. It offers a structured and supportive environment during mealtimes.
A dedicated team, comprising a nurse and a dietician, provides emotional support, encouragement, and reassurance to participants. Crucially, the program extends beyond the meal itself, incorporating distracting and therapeutic activities such as reading, drawing, and music listening in the hour following consumption. This strategy is designed to prevent compensatory behaviors and promote healthier coping mechanisms.
Collaborative Effort and Community Support
This vital initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between several key healthcare structures, including the complex psychiatry structure North Area, the mental health center of Saluzzo, and the complex structure endocrinology and territorial diabetology of the ASL. Their combined expertise ensures a holistic approach to treatment and recovery.
The program has also benefited from significant community support. The association A-, formed by parents, relatives, and friends of individuals with eating disorders, generously donated furnishings to create a welcoming and comfortable dining space. This contribution was made possible by the CO Saluzzo Foundation, which was gratefully acknowledged by Maura acconci, President of A-:
This project is important because it is part of the rehabilitation and healing path, to learn again to appreciate food and conviviality that often, those who suffer from disturbances of this type, avoiding preferring to eat alone. It is indeed critically important to be an eating for the family he knows, that at least for a meal the person will be followed by health figures and will feed correctly.

We wanted to do something more for our patients. The project started a year and a half ago with the complex structure endocrinology and territorial diabetology of the ASL, directed by Laura Gianotti, and now it is indeed a reality for our territory.

Preventing Hospitalizations and Promoting Early Intervention
The assisted meal program is also seen as a crucial step in preventing hospitalizations for severe eating disorders.By providing early intervention and ongoing support, the program aims to address issues before they escalate into life-threatening situations. This proactive approach aligns with current best practices in eating disorder treatment, which emphasize early detection and complete care.
Community Awareness and support: “Mirrors & Skirts” Event
