Assassin’s Creed Hexe: Ubisoft’s New Direction

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Hexe, billed as the darkest and most unusual installment in the series’ history, has just gained a key reinforcement in the script team.

Christopher Grilli returned to the Ubisoft Montreal team as head scriptwriter. Grilli is a true veteran of the franchise – he has worked on such hits as Assassin’s Creed Origins, Valhalla, and became the main writer on the fan-appreciated Assassin’s Creed Mirage (and, let’s face it, Origins and Valhalla had very interesting storylines with many twists). His return to the company after a short break suggests that Ubisoft is relying on proven talents to shoulder the burden of its new flagship production.

Hexe is intended to be a significant departure from the current style of the series. Although gameplay details are still kept top secret, numerous reports point to a dark RPG set in 16th-century Central Europe, during the brutal witch hunts in the Holy Roman Empire. This title is supposed to offer a dense atmosphere of horror and focus on supernatural phenomena, which was confirmed by the first, mysterious promotional materials showing sinister symbols hidden in the forest.

Grilli’s selection as the leader of the scenario team is a signal that Ubisoft wants to combine a fresh, experimental game formula with high-quality narrative that will satisfy long-time fans. Since the first announcement in 2022, players have received almost no new information about Hexe, but the employment of such an experienced creator may mean that the project is entering a key production phase. According to rumors, the premiere is expected to take place by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
