Andorra’s 2025 Commemorative coins: A Party of Sports and Wildlife

Andorra to Mint New €2 Coins Honoring Sporting Event and Endangered species

Teh Principality of Andorra is set to release two new commemorative €2 coins in 2025, each celebrating a distinct aspect of Andorran identity: its commitment to international sports and its rich natural heritage. These coins, minted by the prestigious Monnaie de Paris, promise to be highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Honoring the Games of the Small States of Europe

One of the coins will commemorate the Games of the Small States of Europe. This multi-sport event, designed for smaller European nations, holds special meaning for Andorra, which will be hosting the games for the fourth time since 1985. This demonstrates Andorra’s ongoing commitment to fostering athletic competition and international camaraderie.

The coin’s design features five balls, each representing a different sport, arcing across the coin’s surface. A bullet, symbolizing speed and precision, streaks across the foreground, while the background depicts a stylized playing field. The inscription Games of Small States of Europe arcs along the upper edge, with andorra and 2025 inscribed below the central image. As with all Euro coins, the outer ring displays the twelve stars of the European flag.

A limited mintage of 60,000 Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) specimens will be available in Cincard packaging.

Spotlight on Conservation: the Bearded vulture Coin

The second commemorative coin pays tribute to the bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), a majestic bird of prey native to the Pyrenees Mountains, where Andorra is nestled. Also known as the ossifrage or bone-breaker, this species plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by feeding primarily on bones, thus preventing the spread of disease.

The bearded vulture, known as the Gipeto or Vulture of the Agnelli,is the larger vulture among those that nest in Europe.

The coin showcases a detailed portrait of an adult bearded vulture’s head, emphasizing its distinctive features. The words Andorra and 2025 are inscribed below the image, and the twelve stars of the European flag encircle the outer ring. This coin will also have a mintage of 60,000 BU specimens in Coincard, along with a further 4,000 in Proof Finish cases, appealing to a wider range of collectors.

Andorra’s Unique Political Landscape

Andorra’s unique political structure adds another layer of intrigue to these commemorative coins. The principality is co-ruled by the President of France, currently Emmanuel Macron, and the Bishop of Urgell,Monsignor Joan Enric Vives i Sicília. This dual leadership reflects Andorra’s historical ties to both France and Spain.

Collectors interested in rare coins and European currency should keep a close eye on these releases.
