A week ago lost perhaps the biggest game of the year, Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33two awards from The Indie Game Awards following revelations about the use of generative AI in the development process.
In a statement on its website, organizer Six One Indie wrote that Sandfall originally said the team had not used AI when the game was nominated. On the same day that The Indie Game Awards were held, Six One does say that Sandfall confirmed that some artificial intelligence was used.
Sandfall referred to the whole thing as a misunderstanding, and pointed out that generative AI was not used during development. In a statement to El País, the French company explained that it had accidentally ended up in the full version.
– It felt wrong
Now the game manager has William Broche and art director Nicholas Maxson-Francombe addressed the incident again, in a recent interview with the relatively unknown YouTube channel “Sushi”. There they reiterated that everything in the game is man-made, and that they had only experimented with it in the game’s early phase.
– We tried it, and we didn’t like it. It felt wrong, says Broche.
In the interview, they are completely clear when it comes to AI use for future game projects.
– It is difficult to predict what the industry will look like in the future, but everything from us will be made by people.
Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 was the big winner at The Game Awards, with a total of nine awards.
Following the prize sprinkling, the developers came with a gift package for fans, in the form of more content for the game. The update, which the team is simply calling “Thank You,” gives players a whole new area to explore. One can also find more boss enemies in Endless Tower, a photo mode and brand new music.
