Google is announcing that Gmail is officially entering what the company calls the “Gemini era.” For the more than three billion users worldwide, this means a clear change of direction: the inbox is no longer just a list of messages, but becomes a space actively assisted by artificial intelligence.
The new features are based on Gemini 3 and are designed to reduce the time spent reading, searching and organizing emails.
What other functions appear
The most visible novelty is AI Overviews, a feature already familiar from Google Search, which now also arrives in Gmail. The search bar is no longer just a keyword filter, it works as an assistant you can talk to. Instead of manually searching through dozens of messages, you can ask direct questions, and Gmail gives you a synthesized answer from several emails.
If you ask what is the status of an order, for example, the AI gathers the relevant information from different notifications and displays it clearly: what you ordered, when it arrives and where the package is.
Google is also tackling one of the biggest email frustrations: inbox clutter. This is where AI Inbox comes in, a new view that doesn’t replace classic tabs like Primary or Promotions, but complements them. AI Inbox scans incoming messages and brings to the fore what really matters.
Instead of a long list of topics, see short summaries of concrete things to do or remember, like a medical appointment, an important event, or a message that needs a quick response. The idea is to understand at a glance what is urgent, without opening every email.
The rollout of these features doesn’t happen overnight for everyone. Google is starting with users in the United States and those with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions. AI Overviews is reaching a wider audience faster, while AI Inbox is currently being tested by a smaller group. Global expansion is planned for the coming months. At first, support is only for English, but Google says other languages will be added quickly.
