Adobe Illustrator Receives Major Updates to Enhance Workflow and Typography

One notable enhancement is a significant boost in speed when converting linked images to embedded images, reaching up to ten times faster processing times. Additionally, image processing for common file types like JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and Photoshop files is now approximately five times quicker.

The updates also extend to common graphic effects such as Drop Shadow, Blur, and Inner Glow, reducing processing times by up to five times. These performance improvements aim to streamline the design process, saving valuable time for designers.

Retype: Efficient Font Matching

Adobe introduced a new feature called Retype, designed to simplify the process of font identification and matching. Utilizing a vast library of over 30,000 Adobe Fonts and local fonts available within Illustrator, Retype can quickly determine and match fonts.

Graphic designer and instructor Monika Gause commented on her experience with Retype: “Retype has surprised me multiple times, naming fonts quickly. Other times it couldn’t tell on first try but then nailed it after thinking about it and learning. So, you can really watch it learn and then it helps save you time.” Retype has also expanded its language support to include Japanese, French, and German, catering to a wider global audience.

Advancements in Japanese Typography

Adobe has made substantial enhancements to Illustrator’s Japanese typography capabilities. This includes the introduction of the Momochidori Japanese variable font, which features unique attributes like em-box variations and colored glyphs.

Naoko Naku, a book designer, shared her positive experience with Momochidori: “Momochidori is a unique typeface with a flexible appearance and a unique atmosphere. It fits seamlessly into any project, including picture books like the award-winning Melting into the Sunset. I’m looking forward to seeing more creations with Momochidori!”

Bolstered Korean Typography Options

Complementing the Japanese typography enhancements, Adobe has also improved Korean typography features in Illustrator. These updates aim to meet regional standards and facilitate greater design efficiency, ensuring that Asian designers have the tools they need to create exceptional work.

User-Requested Features

The latest Illustrator release also addresses three user-requested features, further enhancing its utility for designers. Users can now:

• Save patterns and gradients directly to their Creative Cloud Library for easy sharing.
• Calculate the area of shapes or paths within the software.
