Polish military officials reported an “unprecedented violation” of the nation’s airspace on Wednesday, confirming that several Russian drones breached the border and were later shot down.
According to the military, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning, prompting Poland to scramble it’s own and NATO air defenses to intercept and neutralize the drones. The drone incursion took place amidst a large-scale Russian aerial assault on western Ukraine.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated on social media that he was in constant contact wiht NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and other allies following the violation of Polish airspace by a “huge number” of Russian drones.
A NATO spokesperson corroborated these reports, stating that “numerous drones entered Polish airspace overnight and were met with Polish and NATO air defences.”
This event marks the first time Poland has engaged assets in its airspace as russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in early 2022.
The incident also coincides with the European Union’s stepped-up efforts to impose coordinated transatlantic measures against Russia.
the U.S.administration has reportedly requested that the EU impose tariffs of up to 100% on China and India for their purchases of Russian oil, aiming to cut off a significant source of revenue for President Vladimir Putin’s war efforts.
Due to the military activity, some Polish airports, including Warsaw Chopin, the capital’s main international airport, were temporarily closed but have since been reopened.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Russian drones entered Polish airspace during a “massive” attack on Ukraine, adding that Putin is escalating the war and “testing the West.”
Sybiha urged partners to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and called for increased sanctions “without delay.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that about eight Russian drones were involved in the incursion, calling it “an extremely dangerous precedent for Europe.”
Russia has not yet commented on the incident.
In late 2022,a missile struck Polish territory in the village of Przewodów,near the Ukrainian border, resulting in two fatalities. The missile was believed to have been fired by Ukrainian air defense forces while repelling a Russian attack, though NATO stated that Russian forces were ultimately responsible.
‘We need more sanctions’
“We need more pressure on Russia to come to the negotiating table. We need more sanctions.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned Russia’s “reckless and unprecedented” incursion into Poland’s airspace during her state of the union speech, affirming Europe’s “full solidarity” with Warsaw.
Her remarks were met with a standing ovation from European lawmakers.
“Putin’s message is clear. And our response must be clear too,” von der Leyen said. “We need more pressure on Russia to come to the negotiating table. We need more sanctions. We are now working on the 19th package in coordination with partners.”

Von der Leyen added that the EU is exploring a faster phase-out of Russian fossil fuels and is examining Russia’s “shadow fleet and at third countries,” while also considering further support for Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister giorgia Meloni, and Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs have all expressed solidarity with Poland following the drone incident.
Macron described the incursion as “simply unacceptable” and condemned it “in the strongest terms.”
