The Qatari government said that a tanker chartered by the state-owned energy company had been hit by an Iranian missile in the Gulf state’s territorial waters.

“Qatar was targeted… by three cruise missiles launched from Iran,” Qatar’s Defense Ministry said in a statement, according to the news agency AFPWednesday (1/4/2026).

“The Qatari military intercepted two cruise missiles, while a third missile hit an oil tanker chartered by QatarEnergy in Qatari territorial waters,” the ministry said.

“Coordination has been carried out with the relevant authorities to evacuate the tanker, which was carrying 21 crew members, without any casualties,” the ministry added.

Gulf states have faced repeated drone and missile attacks from Iran over the past month, in response to attacks by the United States and Israel that began on February 28.

Iran has targeted hydrocarbon infrastructure in oil-rich Gulf states as well as shipping, effectively closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of global oil normally passes.

QatarEnergy said in a statement that Aqua 1, a fuel oil tanker, had “been the target of a missile attack in the northern territorial waters of the State of Qatar in the early hours of Wednesday”.

They confirmed that no crew members were injured and there was “no impact on the environment as a result of this incident”.

Earlier, a British maritime security agency said that a tanker had been hit by a projectile in the Gulf, off the coast of Qatar’s capital, Doha.

The agency, UK Maritime Trade Operations, said it had received reports of an incident about 17 nautical miles north of Doha, that a tanker had been hit by a projectile on its port side which caused damage to the hull.
