Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing search engines and, consequently, shaping how marketers operate. According to Jim Yu, CEO of enterprise SEO platform BrightEdge, AI summaries, known as AI Overviews, are appearing more frequently at the top of Google search results.

For searches with eight or more words, AI Overviews now appear more than a quarter of the time. Queries of just four words are seeing a doubled frequency of AI Overviews compared to recent months.

Yu notes that AI Overviews have significantly improved over time. Initially introduced with basic informational summaries, they are now capable of offering detailed, relevant recommendations. For example, a query like “What’s the best laptop that’s affordable for graphic design students and has good battery life?” can now yield a seemingly comprehensive overview.

Yu suggests that AI is prompting users to ask more specific questions or filter results efficiently. “Graphic design laptops sorted by battery life, ease of use, or price” is becoming increasingly accessible.

Marketing Leaders Embrace AI Search

A recent study from SEO platform Botify found that 94% of marketing leaders are prepared to optimize their brands for AI search. Yu recommends focusing on strengthening areas where the brand is already a recognized authority or has a distinct advantage.

Enhancing web content about products, services, and operational areas can aid in appearing more frequently in search results. “Brands need to provide detailed and relevant information to secure a higher search ranking,” Yu advises.

Blending Growth and Marketing at PepsiCo

PepsiCo has integrated the role of category growth officer with its CMO for international foods. Mustafa Shamseldin, in his dual role, combines traditional marketing skills with broader strategic perspectives to drive overall growth.

PepsiCo’s Mustafa Shamseldin Discusses Blending Growth and Marketing

Upon assuming his role, Shamseldin integrated numerous functions under his banner, including marketing, commercialization, insights, R&D, and innovation. This holistic approach aims to drive growth comprehensively.

“Our focus is on end-to-end growth, from product initiation through distribution,” Shamseldin explains. “This is a significant shift from the traditional CMO role, which typically focuses narrowly on marketing.”

The new approach measures success by business growth, branding, equity, and profitability, reflecting a broader responsibility for the company’s bottom line.

TikTok Returns as U.S. Law Faces Enforcement Uncertainty

TikTok, the Chinese-owned app, can be found again in Apple and Google app stores, defying previous bans. President Donald Trump signed an executive order delaying the ban by 75 days, but enforcement remained uncertain until recently.

Google and Apple faced a letter from the Justice Department indicating they would not enforce the law, allowing the app to return temporarily. Trump expressed optimism about reaching a deal with China, but the specifics remain unclear.

Netflix Dominates Streaming with Strategic Growth

Netflix leads the streaming market with approximately 301 million subscribers, bolstered by extensive investments in original content. A recent study by research firm MoffettNathanson outlines the significant challenges other streaming services face in catching up.

Netflix’s substantial spending on content and strategic mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are key drivers of its dominant market position. The inherent economies of scale enable significant investments in content, enhancing viewer engagement and growth.

In December, Netflix achieved a record 2 billion views, driven largely by original series such as the second season of “Squid Game” and the movie “Carry-On.”

Generative AI Creates Realities and Challenges

A recent video featuring top Jewish celebrities denouncing Kanye West was debunked as a fake generated by AI. Despite its intended message against antisemitism, the video garnered attention primarily due to several high-profile personalities’ involvement.

Scarlett Johansson, known for her role in the 2013 film “Her,” criticized the use of AI for creating misleading content. “We must call out the misuse of AI, no matter its messaging, or we risk losing a hold on reality,” she emphasized.

The potential for AI to mislead is highlighted in a quiz from London-based software company iProov, where only 0.1% of 2,000 U.S. and U.K. residents could reliably distinguish real images from AI-generated ones, known as deepfakes.

The ratings increase of 202% compared to regular SNL viewership underscores the show’s enduring popularity and successful celebration.
