At least four soldiers died and seven more were injured this Thursday after an attack with explosives against a Colombian Army base in the north of the country, as announced by the Second Division of the Army.

The alleged attack took place against the 27 Military Base, attached to the 14th Infantry Battalion, in the municipality of Aguachica, department of Cesar, according to an Army statement published in X.

According to the authorities, the attack was carried out with explosive devices and was attributed to the National Liberation Army (ELN), a Colombian group designated as terrorist by the US State Department and the European Union.

The general commander of the Colombian Military Forces, Admiral Francisco Hernando Cubides, said in his official X account that “the Camilo Torres Restrepo Front of the ELN Organized Armed Group is responsible for the cowardly terrorist attack carried out a few minutes ago on the Ricaurte Battalion.”

The injured soldiers were evacuated to medical centers in the region, while Army units carry out operations to secure the area, according to the statement.

The attack occurs in the midst of a nationwide “armed strike” declared by the ELN, which has been accompanied by violent actions against infrastructure and public forces, raising tension with the Government of President Gustavo Petro and deepening the crisis of the peace process promoted by his administration.

Authorities indicated that they will provide additional information as the investigations progress.
