James McCann: Contract Extension with Diamondbacks | 2026

The Arizona Diamondbacks are bringing back catcher James McCann on a one-year, $2.75 million contract, according to a person familiar with the deal. The parties agreed to the contract yesterday, which also includes the possibility of earning up to 500,000 in bonuses.

McCann, 35, signed with the D-backs in June and provided solid production, hitting .260 with five home runs and 17 RBIs. He also performed well with the team’s young pitchers, including Ryne Nelson and Brandon Pfaadt.

McCann will likely be the backup to Gabriel Moreno, who hit .285 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs last season. Moreno has missed considerable parts of the last two seasons due to injuries.

McCann, an All-Star in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox, will play his 13th season in MLB. He has a career batting average of .242 and 97 home runs.

Meanwhile, center fielder Tyrone Taylor and the New York Mets agreed yesterday to a one-year, $3.8 million contract that avoided salary arbitration.

The Mets decided not to offer 2026 contracts to three relievers: right-hander Max Kranick and left-handers José Castillo and Danny Young.

All three became free agents before Friday’s deadline to not renew their contracts.

The speedy Taylor has spent the last two seasons with the Mets after being acquired from Milwaukee in a trade.— AP
