Fighting for Her Life: 11-Year-Old Olivia’s Severe Respiratory Battle
An 11-year-old girl from Minnesota is battling for her life after a routine case of the flu turned into a severe respiratory illness. Olivia Lenhart, a fifth grader at Dilworth Elementary School in Dilworth, is now in intensive care, hooked up to machines to help her breathe.
On January 13, Olivia was rushed to the emergency room, struggling to breathe and suffering from dangerously low oxygen levels.
A Spiraling Health Crisis
Initially tested for influenza A, Olivia’s condition rapidly worsened. Doctors diagnosed her with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a condition so severe it required immediate intubation and ventilation for three weeks.

Family’s Grief and Determination
“We’re just devastated. We didn’t expect this to spiral out of control like this,” said Olivia’s father, Mike Lenhart.
Her mother, Jamie, echoed this sentiment, adding, “She’s had influenza A before, but adding pneumonia onto it kind of really put her down pretty quick.”
Born with Down syndrome, Olivia has always shown remarkable resilience. Despite being sedated, her spirit has not gone unnoticed by her medical team, with one doctor describing her as ‘spicy.’
Progress and Challenges
After weeks on a ventilator, doctors were able to remove Olivia’s breathing tube. Despite this progress, she remains dependent on supplemental oxygen. Her recovery journey has been filled with ups and downs, but the family remains hopeful.

Jamie Lenhart notes, “She’s always been very spunky. It’s kind of her way or the highway! I’m hoping she can just continue to keep up that same attitude through this.”
Financial Struggles
The mounting medical bills, combined with the need for specialized therapy and around-the-clock care, have led the family to set up a GoFundMe page to seek assistance from the community.
There is the possibility that Olivia may need long-term care when she is finally allowed home
The family shared, “If she isn’t strong enough to breathe on her own soon, she may need a tracheotomy and a feeding tube, which could mean long-term care at home. It’s something we never imagined we’d have to face.”
Moral of the Story
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu activity in Minnesota has reached the ‘high’ category this winter.
Olivia’s parents are urging others to never take flu diagnoses lightly. Jamie Lenhart pleaded, “I mean, just get that extra test. It just could be a lifesaver.”
The family finds solace in the care of the hospital staff and the community around them. Jamie added, “We are extremely grateful for both the community and the care we’re receiving during this difficult time.”
