Zellnor Myrie’s Vision for New York City’s Future

Brooklyn State Senator and mayoral candidate Zellnor Myrie recently sat down with FAQ NYC podcast hosts Christina Greer, Katie Honan, and Harry Siegel at The City’s offices. Myrie outlined his comprehensive plans for public safety, housing development, and leadership in a city where balancing competing interests is key.

Accountability and Police Reform

“I’ve always represented a community that knew we could hold two things together at the same time: that we want to hold officers accountable when they step over the line but also that we need them as part of our public safety ecosystem,” said Senator Zellnor Myrie.

Myrie is unequivocal in his stance as not being a “defund-the-police Democrat.” Instead, he emphasizes his community’s desire for a balance where officers are held accountable and public safety is ensured. This nuanced approach recognizes the complexities of maintaining public safety while addressing misconduct.

“My mom doesn’t want her son getting pepper sprayed. She wants to feel safe, and that is what this plan is about,” Myrie shared, highlighting the human element behind his policy proposals.

Leadership and National Stances

The discussion expanded to broader political implications. Myrie expressed frustration with current national leadership, specifically citing President Joe Biden’s decision to “not criticize the President when he’s coming after vulnerable New Yorkers.”

For Myrie, this is unacceptable, especially for a city like New York, a beacon of immigration and diversity. “It has been embarrassing for a city of immigrants to have a mayor in Eric Adams who’s chosen to ‘bend the knee, play for a pardon and be unwilling to criticize the President when he’s coming after vulnerable New Yorkers,’ he stated.

Myrie’s approach aligns with a community-centric leadership model, prioritizing the voices and safety of residents over political compromise or public adulation.

Housing Solutions

One of the most pressing issues in New York City is housing, and Myrie has a bold plan. He aims to build 700,000 new housing units over the next 10 years. This ambitious target is rooted in historical context.

“We used to do this in the city. We used to build 70,000 units a year. We built the Empire State Building in 13 months, 100 years ago. Don’t tell me we can’t do big things anymore. This is New York City,” he exclaimed.

His vision is not just about the numbers but about the transformation of New York’s landscape, ensuring that housing remains accessible and affordable for all residents.

Community Engagement and Vision

The interview with FAQ NYC was part of a series featuring each mayoral candidate. This format allows for a 360-degree look at the candidates and their platforms. Myrie’s participation highlights his commitment to engaging with the community and transparent dialogue.

His comprehensive approach includes a balance between police accountability, housing solutions, and leadership integrity, positioning him as a candidate deeply in touch with his community’s needs and aspirations.
