At the negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul, in addition to the recognition of Crimea and four more regions by Russian, representatives of Moscow demanded that Kyiv refuse to join NATO.
The intentions of Ukraine to join the EU and NATO are enshrined in the Constitution. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky reminded journalists during a press conference on Monday 19 on Monday, on Monday.
In particular, the Turkish journalist asked the president whether Ukraine was considering non -block status for himself.
“As for the status – Ukraine has status, it is in the Constitution of Ukraine, everything is written there. I am sure that you know the Turkish Constitution, if there is time, you can read a little Ukrainian,” the Ukrainian leader said, answering the question of whether the neutral status of Ukraine and the NATO are not discussed in the negotiations, as Russia demands.
Recall that in the fall of 2018, President Petro Poroshenko proposed to amend the Constitution and consolidate Ukraine to join the European Union and NATO membership. The Constitutional Court gave a positive opinion on this proposal.
Already on February 7, 2019, the bill approved by the Constitutional Court on the consolidation of the country’s course on European and Euro -Atlantic integration was supported by the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada.
Non -block or neutral status means that the state is not a member of any military union and undertakes not to enter into the future. In the case of Ukraine, this would mean a revision of the course on the Euro -Atlantic integration enshrined in the Constitution.
