A Life Unfurled: Katharina tarabori’s Odyssey from Konolfingen to the World Stage

from Rural Roots to Global Horizons: An Exceptional Journey

Katharina Tarabori,a native of Lower Head, recently captivated an audience at the Lebensmart retirement center in Konolfingen with a vivid recounting of her life’s journey. From her humble beginnings on a farm to navigating the complexities of diplomatic life across continents, Tarabori’s story is one of resilience, adaptation, and profound personal experiences.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

growing up on a farm with three brothers instilled in Tarabori a strong sense of self-reliance from a young age. An early brush with danger – a fall from a stage that resulted in a broken leg – served as a testament to her enduring spirit. After completing her education, she initially assisted on the family farm before securing an apprenticeship at the municipal office. This was followed by a customer service role at Kodak in Lausanne, where she managed accounts for Central Switzerland, Aargau, and Basel City, marking a significant step in her professional advancement.

Love and New Beginnings in Prague

Lausanne also proved pivotal in Tarabori’s personal life,as it was where she met her future husband,Jean-Marc. Their relationship led to a move to Zäziwil, and later, an opportunity to work together in Prague. However, their arrival in the Czech capital was met with disappointment. The apartment – in wich almost everything was defective – was made available to us, Tarabori recalled, painting a picture of stark conditions in communist-era Czechoslovakia, where secrecy and surveillance were commonplace.

Diplomatic Life and Family Expansion

The Taraboris’ journey continued to Brussels, where Jean-Marc worked at the registry and their daughter, Nathalie, was born in 1982. The family’s nomadic lifestyle then took them to Washington D.C., followed by a challenging period in London. Tarabori recounted the difficulties her husband faced at work and the unsettling experience of a police raid on their home. The family later moved to Tel Aviv amidst the Second Intifada, a period marked by both excitement and anxiety. Again and again we heard the bomb or garnet strikes and were not lucky to be hit, her son Jonas Tarabori said, highlighting the ever-present threat of violence. After four years, they moved to Paris, where Katharina enjoyed having more time for herself.

South Africa: A Golden Cage and a Tragic Loss

In 2010,the Taraboris relocated to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup,where Jean-Marc served as vice consul. However, their time there was bittersweet. My husband became vice consul. But it was a shock, I always say that we were in a golden prison. We lived in a heavily guarded department with around 2,500 villas. We could only enter the site with fingerprint or identification,Tarabori explained, describing the stark contrast between their secure environment and the surrounding poverty. Tragically,Jean-Marc passed away shortly after their arrival, marking a devastating turning point in Tarabori’s life.

Finding Peace in Konolfingen

Following her husband’s death, Tarabori returned to Switzerland, initially residing on her brother’s farm before finding an apartment in Konolfingen. Today, she cherishes her family and finds contentment in her community. Her story, a testament to a life lived fully and courageously, resonated deeply with the audience at the Lebensmart retirement center, earning her a standing ovation.
