Youth & Social Services: Why Engagement Is Falling

It is high time that both the government and the politicians who rule Malmö listen more to those who every day meet children who risk harm or end up in the clutches of gang crime.

As soon as both the reporting law – which means that public employees must report undocumented people to the authorities – and abolished confidentiality between authorities are in place, children and young people will no longer apply to social services.

The scrapped secrecy came into effect in December and the plan is for the Whistleblower Act to become a reality on July 1 next year.

As union representatives in the city of Malmö, we see an unsustainable development for the social service to carry out its core mission. Not because the social workers lack competence or will, but because political decisions threaten to remove the foundation for long-term and trust-based social work.
