House Members Push for Senatorial Candidates to Address Vice President Duterte’s Impeachment
In the lead-up to the upcoming May 12 elections, two prominent members of the House Young GunsBloc are urging all senatorial candidates to provide clear positions on the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte. This move comes as the coming election season is set against the backdrop of a high-profile impeachment trial.
Pammy Zamora Calls for Clarity on Public Accountability
Taguig City 2nd district Representative Pammy Zamora emphasized that the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte should be a central issue in the senatorial debates, noting the importance of transparency and accountability. “Absolutely, this will be an election issue. We should be asking our senatorial candidates on how they want their elected officials to be penalized with regard to the impunity in the use of taxpayers’ money, or abuse in government coffers,” she stated.
Zamora further elaborated on the stakes involved, highlighting the need for the candidates to articulate their positions on constitutional violations. “They (Senate bets) should also include in their platforms on how they intend to decide on those who commit what we call culpable violation of the Constitution. So, this is a big challenge and litmus test as to how strong the values of our candidates have on public service,” she said. “Dapat maging independent sila,” she emphasized.
Rodge Gutierrez Weighs In
Rodge Gutierrez, who is part of the House prosecution panel handling the impeachment case, concurred with Zamora’s perspective. “This will definitely be an election issue and I think it should be welcomed. I think this is a sentiment already mentioned also by Senate President Francis Escudero that we can compare with the usual elections [before],” Gutierrez noted.
For Gutierrez, this unprecedented development opens avenues for voters to scrutinize candidates’ stances on public service. “Our take here is that voters should no longer base their preferences on popularity or personality politics. At least now, we already have an issue on how we think our senatorial candidates will fare with regard to the Duterte impeachment complaint,” he explained.
“It is in this regard that we can easily scrutinize their stand, on what will they do, how will they do it and what are their personal convictions,” he said. “Although it’s not strictly a requirement for elections, the fact that it is happening now amid this context, I think it will really be an election issue.”
The Significance of the Call for Transparency
The demand for transparency from senatorial candidates highlights a significant shift in the political landscape. Historically, elections have often been dominated by personality and popularity rather than policy stances. However, the ongoing impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte presents a unique opportunity for voters to gauge candidates’ commitment to principles of accountability and responsiveness to public concerns.
For Zamora and Gutierrez, the impeachment case is not just about an individual’s fate but about setting a precedent for governance and integrity. Their call for clarity reflects a broader societal movement towards a more introspective and accountable political system.
Conclusion
The upcoming elections stand out not just for their anticipated outcomes but for the larger conversation they are generating around public service and accountability. As Pammy Zamora and Rodge Gutierrez have made clear, the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte is a pivotal issue that candidates must address. This shift in voter expectations underscores the importance of substantive policy discussions and candidates’ willingness to engage with them.
