Young Bicolanos Embrace Japanese Culture Through Hello! Japan Program
In a thrilling cultural exchange initiative, young Bicolanos delved into the vibrant world of Japan, thanks to the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines. This program, organized with the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC), not only introduced the participants to the richness of Japanese culture but also provided academic exchange opportunities to foster mutual understanding.
A Holistic Cultural Experience
The JICC’s Hello! Japan program visited Bicol last week, partnering with notable institutions like Sorsogon State University, Bicol University, Cabangan High School, SM City Legazpi, and the SM Supermalls to create a well-rounded cultural experience. It aimed to showcase Japan’s diverse culture, traditions, festivals, food, language, and art.
Meet Yurie Mukaigawa: JICC Cultural Officer
JICC cultural officer Yurie Mukaigawa highlighted the significance of cultural exchanges. She emphasized that despite differences, Japanese and Filipino cultures share commonalities that should be cultivated for the future of both nations.
“Japanese and Filipino cultures, although distinct, share many commonalities. These connections must be nurtured and showcased to the next generation of Filipinos—they are the future of our two nations and of this part of the world,”
– Yurie Mukaigawa, JICC Cultural Officer
Engaging Activities for Participants
The Bicol students took on the challenge of introducing themselves in Japanese and donning traditional Japanese attire such as kimonos, Happi coats, and yukatas. They also participated in fascinating discussions on various aspects of Japanese culture, including traditions, seasons, technology, pop culture, food, and sports.
Cultural Integration: Performance and Exchange
The cultural program continued with a special performance by Japanese singer FuMi, complemented by the students’ rendition of Pantomina, a traditional Bicol dance. These interactions highlighted the beautiful fusion of Japanese and Filipino traditions.
Exploring Academic Exchange Programs
Another vital aspect of the Hello! Japan program was the introduction of Japanese government scholarship opportunities. Interested students were provided with information on how to apply.
Program Objective: Fostering Understanding and Knowledge
Hello! Japan aims to provide an educational experience for elementary, high school, and college students and private organizations. It does so by offering enriched learning sessions that are not only informative but also interactive. Together, these activities shape a deeper and more nuanced understanding of Japan’s culture and heritage.
The Way Forward for Japan-Philippines Relations
Programs like Hello! Japan pave the way for future bilateral relations and collaborations, enriching both nations culturally and intellectually. This initiative presented a prime example of how such exchanges can amplify mutual respect, understanding, and collaboration.
