Cherry blossoms officially bloomed this spring in Seoul on Sunday the 29th.

The Metropolitan Meteorological Administration announced that this year’s cherry blossoms in Seoul bloomed on Sunday, March 29, 6 days earlier than last year (April 4) and 10 days earlier than the average year (April 8).

The standard for cherry blossom blooming is when three or more flowers are in full bloom on any one standard tree.

Seoul’s official cherry blossom blooming is based on the observation standard tree (Yoshino cherry tree) designated within the Seoul Meteorological Observatory and has been observed since 1922.

The cherry blossoms in Yunjung-ro, Yeouido, Seoul’s representative cherry blossom complex, also burst into their first flower buds on the same day, March 29 (Sunday).

This year’s cherry blossoms in Yunjung-ro, Yeouido are 5 days earlier than last year (April 3) and 8 days earlier than the average year (April 6).

The Korea Meteorological Administration has designated Yunjung-ro, Yeouido, as a cherry blossom colony since 2000, and has been observing flowering based on cherry trees numbered 118 to 120 in Yeongdeungpo-gu’s tree management.

The Korea Meteorological Administration provides the flowering status of major cherry blossom and azalea colonies across the country through the Weather Nuri (www.weather.go.kr) website.
