Health Crisis Forces End to Protest

Key figures within the Democratic Jeonbuk Innovation Association have called off their hunger strike, also known as a “weapons fast,” which began on March 14th. The decision comes after Bang Yong-seung, a permanent representative of the National Innovation Association, was hospitalized due to a rapid decline in health. This development prompted serious concerns among association members regarding the well-being of other fasting participants.

Bang’s condition deteriorated rapidly, with blood sugar levels plummeting to a perilous 50mmHg, accompanied by lethargy and severe dizziness. Medical professionals advised immediate hospitalization, fearing further complications if the fasting continued. This incident served as a critical turning point for the association.

Solidarity and Support Before the Halt

Prior to the decision to end the hunger strike, various individuals and groups visited the protest site in front of the Jeonbuk Provincial Office to show their support. Among them were representatives from yoon Seok-yeol’s Jeonbuk Movement Headquarters, including Pastor lee Kwang-ik, Ahn Ho-young, Lee Seong-yoon, Kang-hwan Yoon (Executive Director of the National Innovation Association), and Park Jung-hwan (Chairman of the executive Chairman).

These supporters expressed their worries about the health of Cho Yong-seung, Cho Ji-hoon, Kim Jin-myung, and Lee Woo-kyu, urging them to prioritize their well-being and cease fasting to prepare for future advocacy efforts. This collective concern underscored the gravity of the situation and the need for a strategic shift.

Strategic Shift: From Hunger Strike to Sustained Action

Recognizing the potential long-term health consequences of prolonged fasting, the Democratic Jeonbuk Innovation Association convened an emergency meeting. The primary concern was that the deteriorating health of key leaders could hinder their ability to effectively participate in future campaigns and initiatives.

Consequently, the association leadership decided to conclude the hunger strike at the tent protest site. The immediate focus is now on restoring the health of the participants. Though, the commitment to protesting is not over. As a compromise, the city’s delegation has agreed to continue fasting on a daily basis, starting with the Jeonju delegation, until president Yoon Seok-yeol is dismissed. This approach aims to maintain pressure on the government while safeguarding the health of the activists.

This strategic pivot reflects a growing trend in activism, where sustainability and long-term engagement are prioritized over short-term, potentially debilitating actions. According to a recent study by the Institute for Social Change, movements that incorporate enduring practices, such as rotating fasting schedules and prioritizing mental and physical health, tend to have a greater long-term impact.

The Broader context: Political Activism and Health

The Jeonbuk Innovation Association’s decision highlights the complex interplay between political activism and personal well-being. while hunger strikes can be powerful tools for raising awareness and exerting pressure, they also carry significant health risks. Balancing the need for impactful protest with the responsibility to protect the health of participants is a challenge faced by many activist groups worldwide.

The association’s new strategy of daily rotating fasts represents an attempt to address this challenge, allowing individuals to participate in the protest without risking severe health complications. This approach may serve as a model for other activist groups seeking to engage in sustained political action while prioritizing the health and well-being of their members. The situation underscores the importance of strategic planning and adaptability in the face of unforeseen circumstances within political movements.
