It is said that the lawyer in charge of the ‘Yeosun Incident‘, in which civilians were sacrificed by soldiers in 1948, received compensation on their behalf and did not give it to the bereaved families.

The bereaved family accused the lawyer of embezzlement and applied for disciplinary action from the Seoul Bar Association.

Reporter Song Jeong-hyeon covered the story.

In 2024, the bereaved families of the ‘Yeo-Sun Incident’ won a 700 million won ruling against the state, but did not receive any actual money.

I found out later that the lawyer did not notify me even though he received the compensation on his behalf in December 2024.

It is said that the bereaved family raised the issue five months later, but the explanation was that they “forgot”.

“I politely asked, ‘Why didn’t you make the deposit?’ Then he said, ‘I forgot.’ I said I would make the deposit in 3 days, but the deposit didn’t happen that day again.”

The litigation representative is attorney Shim Jae-hwan, a member of Minbyun.

He made a name for himself as a lawyer in current affairs, including the Lee Seok-ki rebellion conspiracy case.

Even though Attorney Shim wrote two letters of confirmation that he would give the money, he only gave about 300 million won in installments of tens of millions of won each, and has not yet given the rest.

It is known that there are more than 40 lawsuits related to Yeo-sun that Attorney Shim has taken on.

The bereaved family accused Attorney Shim of embezzlement and also submitted an application for disciplinary action to the Seoul Bar Association.

Attorney Shim did not respond to several requests for a rebuttal, saying, “I don’t want to.”
