National Health Alert: Yellow Fever Cases Reported
The National Health Institute has reported a concerning 83 cases of yellow fever nationwide since last year, prompting increased vigilance and preventative measures. This situation underscores the critical importance of vaccination, especially in high-risk areas.
Antioquia Launches Vaccination Campaign
In response to the national health alert, the department of Antioquia has initiated a comprehensive vaccination campaign as part of the broader “Vaccination Week in the Americas” initiative. over 22,000 doses of the yellow fever vaccine have been distributed across the region, targeting vulnerable populations.
Targeted Vaccination Efforts
The Antioquia government is urging residents across all 125 municipalities to update their vaccination schedules,wiht a particular focus on protection against yellow fever,as well as other diseases like pertussis (Tospherine),measles,and polio. The campaign,running from April 26th to may 3rd,aims to reach rural and indigenous communities that often face barriers to accessing regular medical care and are located in areas with elevated health risks.

Dionisia Yusti Rivas, Undersecretary of Public Health of Antioquia, highlighted the strategic distribution of the 22,000 yellow fever vaccine doses. Priority is being given to populations in the subregions of Magdalena Medio,Urabá,and Bajo Cauca,as well as the municipalities of Dabeiba,San Luis,and Sonsón (specifically the corregimiento of La Danta).These areas have been identified as having a higher risk of yellow fever transmission.

To ensure the success of the vaccination campaign, basic healthcare teams in municipalities like Chigorodó have received specialized training. These teams, comprised of 50 professionals from various fields, are actively engaging with communities to disseminate crucial information about the importance of vaccination and address any concerns or misconceptions.
Vaccines Readily Available and Free of Charge
The Antioquia government has emphasized that the yellow fever vaccine is readily available at all vaccinating IPS (Instituciones Prestadoras de Servicios de Salud) throughout the department. Moreover, these vaccines are provided free of charge, removing a significant barrier to access and encouraging widespread participation in the vaccination program.
