XXL Cycle Path Now Open | New Route Details

by drbyos

The project experienced some delay but finally saw the light of day before the end of 2025. This December, the Métropole de Lyon completed the development of 800 meters of cycle path on rue de Bonnel in the 3rd arrondissement of Lyon as part of its XXL “Voies Lyonnaises” plan dedicated to two wheels.

The section of “Voie Lyonnaise n°11” extends from Cours Garibaldi to Part-Dieu, runs along the Halles Paul Bocuse, the courthouse and the Rhône prefecture. It leads to the quays of the Rhône on the left bank to cross the already developed Voie Lyonnaise 1.

More trees and vegetation, fewer lanes for cars

The new layout offers cyclists a wide path in both directions with a width of 3 to 3.5 meters depending on the location.

Car traffic has gone from three lanes to just one, a bus lane is still there as is currently the case (but shared with bicycles until now). The parking lots on the south side of the street are maintained but spaces are removed on the north side on part of the street.

The great novelty of the project is above all the revegetation of this very mineral axis. A strip of vegetation has been created along the Voie Lyonnaise, covering a total of 800m2.

In 2026, Line 11 (VL11) of Voies Lyonnaises plans to connect Lyon 5ᵉ to Chassieu on a 19 km route crossing Old Lyon, the Presqu’île, Lyon Part-Dieu, the route de Genas and Chassieu. Ultimately, it will extend in 2030 to Craponne in the west over a route of more than 25 km.
