Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison has been aggressively expanding its network infrastructure, with a focus on 4G Base Transceiver Stations (BTS). By the end of 2024,the company had approximately 196,000 BTS sites across the country,supporting a customer base of 94.7 million. This expansion is crucial for accommodating the growing demand for digital services, particularly those powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
In the past year, Indosat invested significantly in its network, allocating Rp 9.937 trillion in capital expenditure. A substantial 82.7% of this investment was dedicated to enhancing cellular networks,while the remainder was used to strengthen its position in MIDI and IT services,solidifying its commitment to becoming an AI-driven telecommunications provider. Indosat currently operates with a total frequency spectrum of 135 mhz.
Telkomsel: Leveraging Scale and Expanding Coverage
Telkomsel remains a dominant force in the Indonesian telecom market,contributing significantly to Telkom’s overall revenue. In 2024, Telkomsel generated Rp 113.3 trillion in revenue, marking a 10.7% year-on-year growth. This growth is fueled by a large customer base and strategic expansion into new areas.
Telkom’s decision to transfer its consumer business, Indihome, to Telkomsel further strengthens the latter’s position. telkomsel now serves 159.4 million customers, along with Indihome’s 10.8 million customers (including both B2C and B2B segments). Telkomsel is actively expanding its coverage and improving service quality, particularly in remote areas. As of December 2024, Telkomsel operated 271,040 BTS sites, including 221,290 4G BTS and 975 5G BTS. This extensive network infrastructure supports the increasing digital needs of the Indonesian population, as evidenced by a 13.9% year-on-year increase in data traffic, reaching 20,386,475 TB in 2024. Telkomsel utilizes a total frequency spectrum of 165 MHz.
XLSmart: A New Contender with Ambitious Goals
The merger of XL Axiata and Smartfren has created a formidable new player in the Indonesian telecommunications landscape: XLSmart. Operating under the XLSMART banner, the company aims to become the most loved company in Indonesia by 2027. With a combined market share of 25%, a proforma revenue projection of Rp 45.8 trillion, and a customer base exceeding 94.5 million, XLSmart is poised to disrupt the market.

XLSmart operates with a total of 211,000 BTS sites. Following the return of a 2 x 7.5 MHz bandwidth in the 900 MHz frequency band to the government, XLSmart now operates uplinks and 107 MHz Downlinks in the 850 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 2300 MHz frequency bands.
